Torstein Dale Sjotveit: My Visit to Northern Region Part 3

by Datuk Torstein Dale Sjøtveit, CEO

Well, it has come down to the final part of my Northern Region Visit. In my previous writings, I have shared with you on happenings in Bintulu as well as Miri and Lawas. Here, allow me to share with you highlights of my visit to Murum on Monday, 10 March 2014.

Visiting Schools in Murum

Included in the schedule was a stop-over at two primary schools in Murum, namely SK Tegulang Murum and SK Metalun Murum. Together with me was Jiwari Abdullah, Senior Manager II, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We arrived at SK Tegulang at around 10am and at SK Metalun later at around 2pm. The weather throughout the day was fine, and just nice for the activities planned.

In SK Tegulang, we were honoured to be hosted by Encik Sibi Lang, Headmaster, and Encik Saran Joo, Chairman of Parent Teacher Association. While at SK Metalun, we were humbled to have been received by students, parents and teachers. For me, it was wonderful to see all the students smartly dressed in their school uniforms.

Just to share with you, both the schools have only recently been set up and the community of Tegulang and Metalun have shown much enthusiasm and dedication towards making education a reality for the children. Personally, I always believe that it is important for us to provide the children an equal opportunity towards a brighter future, and I am glad to know the schools are already progressing. We now have 280 students and 18 teachers in the schools that we have built for the Murum Hydroelectric Project Resettlement. Only 25% of these children have ever been to school.

Visit to Tegulang Resettlement Village

Apart from visiting the schools in Murum, we also stopped by Tegulang Resettlement Village. We had the opportunity to interact more closely with the villagers there, and we are happy to know they are living comfortably in their new homes.

Visit to Murum Power Station

From Tegulang Resettlement Village, we departed to Murum Power Station and arrived at around 4pm. There, we were led by Frankie Chin, Project Director, Murum Hydroelectric Project. I was keen to observe the recent developments of Murum Power Station before its operations.

This was the final programme for the day. Unfortunately, I did not manage to visit Limbang this time, but I sure hope to embark on another trip to Northern Region soon. I made my way from Bintulu to Miri, then from Lawas to Murum, and successfully did my site visits, as well as attended dialogue sessions. They were undeniably insightful and unforgettable.
