The people of Sibu saw their historic kampung houses along Kampung Datu/Kpg Hilir razed to the ground in the biggest and worst ever fire ever to hit Sibu in recent times. The fire, on Wednesday, 19 June 2013 started at around 4.00 pm and quickly engulfed the wooden houses.
One of our staff, Mohd Junaidi Haji Sambang of SESCO Sibu who happened to notice the thick black smoke from the distance, rushed to the scene at around 5.30 pm and immediately assisted the BOMBA fire fighters in trying to control the fire.
Sarawak Energy being a responsible corporate company came to the aid of the 107 or so families including 653 victims of Kpg Datu/Hilir in Sibu.
A simple ceremony to hand over the donations was held at the Kpg Datu & Kpg Hilir Fire Victims Operations Room, LAKIS Building, Sibu by Cik Peridah Samawi, SESCO Central Region’s Regional Manager to Penghulu Haji Hussain, on behalf of YB Dr. Annuar Rapa’ee, Chairman, Kpg. Datu & Kpg. Hilir Fire Victims Relief Committee.
The donations in the form of cash and kind were contributed by Sarawak Energy and staff from Dalat, Mukah, Sibu, Kuching and SESCO PKPI (Sibu) who were deeply touched by the tragedy.
Among those present at the ceremony were Lily Jee, Anai Rajau from SESCO Central Region Office and Syahmi Jamali, Senior Administrative Officer (SAO), Resident Office, Sibu.
